Rajan Suri's Books and Articles aimed at Industry Readers
During the last 20 years I have published several books and numerous articles related to QRM, most of them aimed at an Industry audience. My latest books are listed below.
POLCA is a simple, yet highly effective, card-based visual control system for companies making high-mix, low-volume or custom products. This is the first book on POLCA. Read more...
Yes, you can compete against low-wage countries!
Published in 2010, this is my second book on QRM, and it is your best introduction to QRM strategy. It covers the four core principles, has the latest developments, and at the same time it is a quick read.
Here is what people are saying about It's About Time...
In the decade since the publication of Rajan Suri’s landmark first book on Quick Response Manufacturing, the innovative principles of QRM have been proven out via impressive results at many companies, big and small, in a variety of industries. While the key principles of QRM remain unchanged, after a decade of teaching QRM workshops to senior executives Suri has developed a concise yet convincing way of presenting QRM strategy using four core concepts.
The text contains new case studies on QRM implementation. The book also shows how factories in advanced nations can use QRM strategy to compete with manufacturers in low-wage countries. An additional chapter provides pointers for implementation including accounting strategies, cost-justification approaches, and a stepwise process for implementation. Also included is a bonus CD with five appendices that provide a number of practical details to assist in the success of your QRM implementation.

The first comprehensive book on MCT...
Learn about MCT: the innovative time-based metric that supports improvement projects
This handy book is a working reference for practitioners using the MCT metric. MCT is a time-based metric that supports continuous improvement projects, since it quantifies an organization’s total system-wide waste. Properly used, MCT does not need to be data-intensive and can be relatively easy to apply. Thus, by comparing “before” and “after” values, MCT provides a simple yet powerful metric with which to measure improvement.
Although the origins of MCT are in manufacturing – the acronym stands for Manufacturing Critical-path Time – the metric can be used in many other contexts including supply chains, insurance, banking, health care, and other industries.
This Guide provides the key rules and guidelines for using MCT. It serves as a reminder of the main points as well as a checklist to ensure that you have taken into account the major items needed for MCT calculation and use.
Practitioners will appreciate the concise and easy-to-follow format. In particular, the formatting and binding of the Guide allows you to lay the Guide flat and easily reference all the points for a given topic at one time.
See the highly complimentary review of the Guide in THE FABRICATOR magazine (click here) and also the strong recommendation for the MCT Guide in this Industry Week blog...
This Guide is a “must-have” for anyone using MCT in continuous improvement projects!

Results of QRM and MCT at Nicolet Plastics
In 2009, Nicolet Plastics (Mountain, Wis.) realized that customers were increasingly sourcing their high-volume plastic parts offshore to reduce costs. The company also observed that although the high-volume business was leaving, the low-volume business was not. Management began looking for a manufacturing strategy that supported the needs of short-run, complex-part customers, and decided that QRM strategy, combined with the MCT metric, fit their goals perfectly. The results, in just three years, have been nothing short of amazing. According to Joyce Warnacut, Chief Financial Officer, “We initiated our QRM effort in 2010 and the most impressive impact of QRM has been on Nicolet Plastics’ earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT). The EBIT for 2012 alone was roughly equal to the EBIT for the 10-year period from 2000 through 2009 combined!”
